Central Coast Local Health District (CCLHD) delivers public mental health services across the Gosford and Wyong areas, including inpatient units at Gosford Hospital and Wyong Hospital, community mental health teams, and specialist services. The Central Coast has a population of over 340,000 and is one of the most populous regional LHDs in NSW.
The region has significant socioeconomic diversity, with pockets of high disadvantage alongside affluent coastal communities. This mix creates substantial demand for both community mental health and AOD services, as well as private practice. headspace centres in Gosford and Wyong support the region's large youth population.
The Central Coast PHN funds primary mental health services and psychological therapy programs including those under the Better Access initiative. The NDIS has driven strong growth in psychosocial support and behaviour support roles across the region, with numerous registered NDIS providers operating from Central Coast base.
The Central Coast's location between Sydney and Newcastle makes it an attractive option for clinicians who want to work regionally while maintaining proximity to major centres. This reduces some of the recruitment pressure typical of more isolated regions, though demand still consistently outpaces local workforce supply, particularly for psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and mental health nurses.
Workforce demand
Strong demand across all disciplines. NDIS sector is particularly active. Private practice openings are consistent. Proximity to Sydney makes recruitment somewhat easier than more remote regions.
