About Youth Mental Health
Mental health conditions most commonly emerge during adolescence and young adulthood — 75% of mental health conditions develop before age 25. Australia has invested significantly in youth-specific early intervention through the headspace network (160+ centres nationally), Orygen's specialist early psychosis and clinical programs, and state-based adolescent mental health services.
Practitioners working in youth mental health need a youth-friendly, non-stigmatising approach that meets young people where they are — in digital spaces, schools, and community settings as much as clinical ones. Key presentations include anxiety, depression, emerging personality disorder, early psychosis, eating disorders, AOD use, and suicidality. The integration of vocational, educational, and social support alongside mental health treatment is a distinctive feature of youth services.
The sector is distinctive in its emphasis on early intervention, stepped care, and avoiding over-medicalisation of normal developmental experiences. headspace centres are the main point of entry, providing brief intervention and referral to more intensive services. Orygen and the Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) model are internationally recognised for their work with young people experiencing psychosis.
